AGRIFOOD-ENV-DSS Phase II: Research and development of a digital decision support system in the agri-food industry.

The AGRIFOOD-ENV-DSS project, AEI-010500-2023-92, funded under the grants for AEIs (Innovative Business Clusters) by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, is launching Phase II of the project. This pioneering initiative aims to research and develop a new digital decision-making system to optimize production processes in the agri-food industry, with a specific focus on the beverage industry, including wine, cava, and beer.

The AGRIFOOD-ENV-DSS system has achieved significant milestones in its first phase. Now, Phase II will focus on expanding and improving the system’s functionalities, with a special emphasis on assessing the ecological footprint throughout the entire value chain and integrating georeferenced information from satellite remote sensing.

The consortium, composed of Asociación Aragón Innovalimen, INNOVI, Grandes Vinos y Viñedos, La Zaragozana, Bodegues Sumarroca, Fama Systems, and Soluciones Cuatroochenta, will collaborate with the CREDENAT and GEOFOREST research groups from the University of Zaragoza. Together, they are embarking on Phase II of the project with the goal of strengthening sustainability strategies and optimizing key processes throughout the entire value chain.

In this phase, a chatbot will be implemented, and new georeferenced data will be integrated using advanced GIS and satellite remote sensing technologies, providing relevant information for operational management. These advancements will enable the assessment of the ecological footprint across the entire value chain (Scope 1, 2, and 3), involving all stakeholders of the participating companies, from farmers to small and medium-sized production and processing enterprises.

Phase II will also focus on improving the usability of the system, facilitating the input of environmental data in the field through innovative technologies. The strategic goal of the participating companies is to optimize their production processes, enhance decision-making, and reduce their ecological footprint, particularly in energy and water consumption. This project directly responds to the growing demand for more sustainable products from consumers increasingly aware of climate change.

The AGRIFOOD-ENV-DSS project will significantly contribute to promoting a more sustainable and transparent production model in the agri-food industry. Phase II will address key challenges, such as the monitoring of Scope 3 ecological footprint, strengthening collaboration with suppliers, and facilitating transparent environmental communication.

With the evolution toward a prescriptive management model, the AGRIFOOD-ENV-DSS system is positioned as an indispensable tool for the agri-food industry, providing the ability to analyze and monitor environmental impacts, minimize risks, and optimize resource consumption.

In the next phase, the feasibility of certifying the ecological footprint of the collaborating companies will be evaluated, strengthening their market position and reinforcing their commitment to sustainability.
