The FOODSHOPPER project concludes: an e-commerce platform with a virtual assistant powered by AI.

Boosting the consumption of sustainable and local products with FOODSHOPPER

NAGRIFOOD leads the FOODSHOPPER project in collaboration with the Aragón Food and Nutrition Cluster and with the participation of iAR, ACMP, El Navarrico, and El Caserío. This project aims to promote the consumption of sustainable and locally sourced foods, encourage healthy diets, and reduce food waste through the design of an innovative e-commerce platform equipped with an artificial intelligence chatbot. The initiative is part of the AEI support program, funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.

Project Launch

In the initial phase of the project, the goal was to create an online store offering regional products from Navarra in a modern and original way. To achieve this, FOODSHOPPER utilizes the latest technologies and digital innovations.

An additional objective of the FOODSHOPPER development is to promote the consumption of sustainable and locally sourced foods, as well as to reduce food waste, a problem that particularly affects the agri-food sector.

In addition to NAGRIFOOD, the project includes the participation of SMEs associated with the cluster, such as iAR, ACMP, El Caserío, and El Navarrico. The communication agency Kamikaze was also involved in designing the platform’s visual concept.

The FOODSHOPPER project emerges in an ideal technological context known as the “Digital Era,” where e-commerce has experienced exponential growth due to changes in consumer habits driven by technology.

However, as competition in this space increases and consumer expectations evolve, it is necessary to develop new platforms that are more relevant and adapted to the changing demands of the market.

For this reason, FOODSHOPPER has explored the feasibility of applying artificial intelligence to create a virtual seller that goes beyond simple category navigation and acts as a personalized advisor, capable of answering questions and providing recommendations like a product expert.

Project Objectives

To initiate work on the project, two primary objectives were established:

  • Development of the Personal Food-Shopper
  • Creation of the Marketplace or online store

Use of Artificial Intelligence

During project execution, iAR worked on integrating AI into the platform, selecting Chat GPT-4, the latest version launched in 2023 by OpenAI, to create the virtual advisor.

Picking and Logistics

The consulting firm ACMP focused on the logistics area, designing an optimal and efficient order management and preparation (picking) system tailored for e-commerce, facilitating online sales for agri-food companies in Navarra.

To achieve this, various online commerce-specific logistics flow models were evaluated through interviews with specialists in distribution and online sales channels from other sectors.

Prototype Design

To create the marketplace prototype, NAGRIFOOD collaborated with El Caserío and El Navarrico to select the products that would populate the first version of the online store. For example, some of the selected products included marinated artichokes.

At the same time, the cluster worked with the communication and digital design agency Kamikaze to prepare the texts, structure, and visual identity of the online store.

The FOODSHOPPER project is part of the 2023 AEIs (Innovative Business Clusters) aid program and is funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
